  • When the Church grew from a small group of about 120 disciples on the day of Pentecost to 3120, and more joined in the next few years; many people started teaching different messages about Jesus, God, the Holy Spirit and the resurrection.
  • Some taught what we call heresies.
  • Some taught that Jesus was not God, others taught that He was not born of a woman;
  • still others taught that the Holy Trinity was not Three Equal persons. Some taught that resurrection had taken place and that Jesus was not coming back, while others taught that there is no resurrection from the dead.
  • So the disciples taught about these key doctrines but many started teaching other things which were not biblical.
  • So the Church decided to write down what we believed and what should be taught.
  • The first to be written is the Apostles Creed. By around 150 AD it was already in circulation.
  • In 325 AD the whole Global Church met as first Council in the City of Nicaea in Turkey where they formulated the Creed called Nicene and was amended.
  • During 1st Council of Constantinople in 381 AD. That is the final edition which we have to date. The Creed is called the Symbol or Statement or profession of our faith.
  • It summarizes what we believe.
